ABOUT THE PROJECT

RISE (Reintegration through Skills and Education) is a European cooperation project funded under Erasmus+ KA220-ADU. The project addresses one of the most pressing challenges in adult education across Europe: the educational exclusion of low-skilled inmates.

A significant number of prisoners across European correctional systems lack basic competences in literacy, numeracy, natural sciences, and foreign languages. These deficits represent major barriers to social reintegration, employability, and lifelong learning. At the same time, prison education systems often face structural limitations, including limited resources, insufficient tailored materials, and restricted access to digital tools.

RISE responds to these challenges by developing a structured, modular General Competences Course designed specifically for low-skilled adult inmates. The project combines evidence-based adult learning methodologies with innovative AI-supported tools and flexible teaching solutions adaptable to various prison environments across Europe.

The project contributes to European priorities in:
– Quality assurance in adult education
– Inclusion and diversity
– Access to learning opportunities for marginalized groups

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of RISE is to strengthen basic competences among low-skilled inmates in order to support their social rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Specific objectives include:
1. Development of a modular General Competences Course covering four thematic areas:
– Literacy and humanities
– Numeracy and mathematics
– Natural sciences and environmental awareness
– Basic English language
2. Integration of adaptive and AI-supported learning methodologies to personalize educational pathways and enhance learner engagement.
3. Creation of a comprehensive Teaching Guide supporting prison educators with practical methodologies, assessment tools, and AI-enhanced instructional strategies.
4. Pilot testing and validation of the course materials in partner countries’ penitentiary institutions.
5. Strengthening international cooperation in prison education and promoting transferable, scalable solutions across European correctional systems.
